The Phantom of the Opera






      1) Place
  • The story is set in Paris, the capital of Paris.
  • The main events take place in the Opera House and the passage ways below it.
  • The Opera House is completed in 1875 at a cost of forty-seven million francs.
  • It has seventeen floors. Ten floors are above the ground and seven are below the ground.
  • There are many dark and confusing passage ways under the Opera House.
  • The foundation floor is filled with a lake of water to help stabilize the huge building.


        2) Time
  • The period of the story is 1880.
  • It is in the 19th century.


        3) Social background
  • It is a time where the Parisian society is proud of not having work for a living.
  • Their lives are centred around attending grand balls, going to art galleries and attending operas.
  • They reject the existence of the poor and anything that is too hideous to behold.
