SYNOPSIS


CHAPTER 1: THE DANCERS

In this chapter, there is a lot of excitement in the dancers’ dressing room. Annie Sorelli runs in claiming to have seen the face of the Opera ghost and soon all the girls are gossiping about him. Little Meg Giry warns them about spreading rumours. The Phantom of the Opera does not like it. She begins to relate her mother’s encounters with the Phantom in Box 5 where he will sit to watch the opera performances. The girls do not listen to Meg’s advice. When the Opera finishes, Madame Giry rushes into the dressing room to announce the death of Joseph Buquet. The Opera ghost is blamed for hi untimely death.


CHAPTER 2: THE DIRECTORS OF THE OPERA HOUSE
The two directors of the Opera House are Monsieur Armand Moncharmin and Monsieur  Firmin Richard. They are discussing about the death of Joseph Buquet. Everyone is saying that it is the work of the Opera ghost. The directors also receive a letter from the ghost and they are told not to sell tickets for Box 5 and to allocate for him 20, 000 francs a month. The ghost claims that he could be a good friend but a bad enemy. La Carlotta falls ill and the directors replace her with Christine Daaé.


CHAPTER 3: CHRISTINE DAAÉ
Christine has the voice of an angel and all Paris is talking about her. Raoul, the brother of Comte de Chagny, has fallen in love with her. He has met her on a holiday four years ago. Roul goes to visit Christine but she tells him she does not know him and asks him to leave. Later, he hears a man’s voice in her room and thinks that Christine has a lover.


CHAPTER 4: THE PHANTOM IS ANGRY
on Wednesday morning, the two directors are happy for Christine is an overnight success. The next opera night is Friday and faust would be performed again but this time, La Carlotta would be singing Margarita. By afternoon, second letter arrives. It comes from the Opera ghost who is angry with the directors for denying his previous requests. In this letter, he insists that Christine must sing Margarita on Friday night. They consult Madame Giry who advises them not to make the ghost angry for he can be a bad and dangerous enemy.


CHAPTER 5: A LETTER FOR RAOUL
Raoul receives a letter from Christine asking him to meet her on Tuesday at three o’clock in the Tuileries Gardens. Christine is late for the appointment and Raoul becomes very anxious. Finally, she comes and both of them reminisced about their happy week in Brittany four years ago. Christine tells Raoul she has to go back to Norway as she is too poor to be his wife. Now, she has become famous and it is due to the Opera ghost who is in love with her. He tutors her and she is filled with gratitude towards him.


CHAPTER 6: LA CARLOTTA SINGS MARGARITA
On Friday morning, La Carlotta receives a letter with no name on it. It warns her not to sing that night for accidents can happen and she can lose her voice forever. La Carlotta is angry for she thinks that it is a prank played by Christine’s friends. She is determined to sing. When she sings, she begins to croak like a toad and a large chandelier falls and crashes on the people below. After this incident, La Carlotta never sings again.


CHAPTER 7: MY ANGEL OF MUSIC
The Opera House is closed for two weeks. Two days before the Opera House opens again, raoul receives another letter from Christine. She warns to meet him on the tenth floor of the Opera House. The tenth floor is a very dangerous place with hundreds of ropes going down to the stage below. Here, Christine tells Raoul about the ghost who is actually a man named Erik and his love for her. Erik has taken her to his house on the lake under the Opera House. The phantom has an ugly and terrible face of a dead man and he wants to marry her. Raoul loves Christine and he would not let her marry Erik.


CHAPTER 8: WHERE IS CHRISTINE DAAÉ?
The directors now understand the request by the Phantom. They do not want any more accidents and decide to comply with his demands. The evening begins well. The chandelier is now back in the place with new ropes. Everyone wants to hear Christine’s voice again and are very interested in the love story between Christine and Raoul. They are all wondering how this love story would end because of the social difference between the two families. When Christine appears on stage, she is very afraid but she sings like an angel. Suddenly, all the lights in the Opera House go out and women’s scream pierces the air. When the lights appear again, Christine disappears.


CHAPTER 9: THE HOUSE ON THE LAKE
The Persian takes Raoul to look for Christine. They go to Christine’s dressing-room and go through the mirror, which is a secret door to the underground. They walk through secret doors in the floor, along passages and down dark stairs. The Persian is trying to take Raoul to Erik’s house on the lake from the back way. Unfortunately, he goes through the wrong door and enters the room of mirrors, which is a torture room. The room is very hot and soon Raoul and the Persian are slowly dying. Only Christine can save them. She tells Erik that she will marry him.


CHAPTER10: MADAME GIRY VISITS THE PERSIAN
For weeks, all Paris talks about is that night at the opera. Everyone wonders what has happened to Christine, Raoul and the Phantom of the Opera. One afternoon, Madame Giry goes to a small house near the Rivoli gardens to visit the Persian. He tells her that the Phantom died three days ago. His name is Erik and because of his terrible, ugly face, he could not live in the outside world. He wants a woman’s love and he has chosen Christine. The Phantom has spared Christine and Raoul’s life and let the two lovers go away to build a new life together.
